Blogger Paragraph Spacing

Blogger's editor has an annoying bug.

I prefer to have a space in between paragraphs so I press "Enter" twice to insert an extra line break. In the editor, the space looks fine but when you look at it after publishing, there's at least two lines in between paragraphs instead of just one. It's driving me a little crazy.

I couldn't find anything about it in Blogger's Help but I did find a lot of complaints about the same bug when I used Google Search. It's strange that Blogger's programmers haven't solved it.

I'm making this post to make an experiment. I'm going to try copying and pasting this post in MS Word and OpenOffice Writer and format it before copying and pasting it back into Blogger's editor, just to see if it'll fix it. I read one hit in my search that  he had tried the same thing and the post had become completely messed up. I'm still willing to try in case I do something differently.

WITH MS WORD 2003:

Okay, I've copy-pasted this same post to MS Word 2003. I've configured the "paragraph" setting to add a 12 point space after each paragraph. Then, I'm going to copy-paste this back to Blogger. Now I need to add a couple of paragraphs.
I'm doing this because I'm a bit annoyed at having such a large expanse in between paragraphs. I find it strange that Blogger hasn't fixed it. It's so obvious to anyone. It shouldn't be difficult to fix right?
Or does it only happen in Google Chrome? I abandoned Internet Explorer a looong time ago. I tried out Firefox for a while but settled on Chrome eventually.
Okay, time to see if this works

Well, you can see the results. Blogger's editor has removed the paragraph spacings.

WITH OPENOFFICE WRITER:

Okay, I've copy-pasted this same post to OpenOffice Writer . I've configured the "paragraph" setting to add a 12 point space after each paragraph. Then, I'm going to copy-paste this back to Blogger. Now I need to add a couple of paragraphs.

Final verdict: Blogger's editor preserves the spacing when you paste from OpenOffice Writer. From here on, I'm going to write my posts in OpenOffice and copy-paste to Blogger when I'm finished.

UPDATE:

I've made a new post about the same topic with a possible solution. Read it here:
Blogger Paragraph Spacing 2

  1. I also would like to use normal paragraph formatting without br. But at this moment it could be done with paragraph tags p in HTML mode. sadly.

    1. I hardly use HTML mode. 'Easier for me to write my post up in a separate editor like OpenOffice Writer, open my blog, create a new post, paste the text and pictures from OpenOffice, and publish. I haven't checked if links will paste automatically but it's not a big deal. We all make our own solutions. I'm just more comfortable with mine.

  2. I've been getting a lot of views for this post so I think I'd better make an update here.

The last two posts I made in this blog were created using Blogger's editor. It seems that they've heard our complaint. The double space has been reduced to a single space which is much better. I don't know if this is true for everyone or if it's just something I did (I wish I knew).

I'll continue using Blogger's editor for the next few posts before I come to a conclusion.

  3. Kept getting 2 lines between paragraphs instead of 1. This is the bizarre way I fixed it.

    • In the post, separate the 2 lines with a single line space (hit enter)
    • While your 'blinking text cursor' is in the blank line between the 2 paragraphs, click 'Insert Jump Break' (at the top next to the 'Insert Image' and 'Insert a Video' icons)
    • Now you should have 4 lines - From top to bottom...line of text, jump break, blank line, line of text
    • Move your 'blinking text cursor' to the beginning of line 4 (the 2nd line of text). Hit backspace 2 times (thus deleting the blank line and the jump break line)
    • Now hit 'Preview' and even though the lines are on top of each other in the post editor, they're single spaced when you publish.

Makes no sense. Figured it might help someone else.

    1. It's still a problem for you? That's strange because my paragraph space is only one line now. It used to be about two lines but it's not anymore. I'm using Google Chrome. Might the issue be connected to what browser you're using?

    2. Also, using google chrome here. the only solution i've found is doing the steps I listed above.

  4. I've been investigating why my newer posts seemed to have "solved" the double spaced separation problem without my doing anything. Working on a hunch from Arūnas Paulauskas' comment, I checked the HTML editor and compared the new posts with the older posts. There is a marked difference. I am not an HTML user so I am unable to fully describe the difference properly.

In the older posts, the HTML code is full of things I will call as "definers," or code that seem to define what the main text will look like (font, font size, etc.).

Each paragraph has what I'd call a "break" code. It's a "<" followed by "br", a space, a slash, and a ">." (I can't type it here as it appears because the comments editor tries to use it as an HTML code). When I end a paragraph, I get a break code, followed by a set of definers, another break code, a "span" code (don't know what that does) and another break code. That's three breaks in a row, hence the double spaced paragraph separation.

The newer posts are very, very different! There are no definers and there are only two break codes after each paragraph. One at the end of the paragraph and another at the next line. Ergo, a one-line paragraph separation.

Theory: My default font is Georgia and the default size is 12. When I type in my posts, I no longer need to define the font and font size via the editor controls. Blogger's editor
doesn't have to insert all those "definers" as long as I use the default fonts.

    Maybe.
